Per usual, once the adults have come up with an idea and give it to the kids, the kids make it 100% better than we even imagined. The Pokemon creations were AMAZING!! Who knew you could make such things out of a bouncy ball, tissue paper and some masking tape? While they were in snack, Ms. Alexander brought them all downstairs, but they ran away. So everyone got an "Ipad" map and had to go find them. First, the whole group had to stop and spin around to get their Pokeballs, then use the balls to toss in the cup and catch each Pokemon. After catching each one, they put a sticker on their map. First group back won! Actually, every group won a prize after presenting their back stories. A fabulous time was had by all, though they were all a little tired after running around. Even Mr. Kelsey! Some kids called it the best game ever!

After the wonderful showcase last night (thanks everyone for coming to support your campers!) the Theater & Arts classes had planned to do some walking field trips today. Obviously, the weather has not cooperated. The camp administrators put their heads together yesterday afternoon and came up with a super cool Pokemon Go game with an artsy twist. This morning, all of the kids were divided into groups. Each group had 30 seconds to choose their art supplies and then all groups had 1st period to create their own Pokemon character along with a name and back story. During snack, Ms. Alexander will be hiding them around the building, and each team will get a map to go and catch them. There will be prizes for all, with 1st prize going to the most creative character. So far, everyone is having a blast!
Ms. Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education The After Care group finished their kindness bracelets and attached notes explaining how to use them. To get them out into the world, they set up a basket of them at Claire's Corner Copia, so that restaurant patrons can pick one up for free. Thanks Claire's, for letting them come by yesterday and drop them off! Afterward, the whole group went out to get ice cream. It was a great treat for such a hot day but some, like Forest, wound up getting as much ice cream on her as in her ;-).
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education You know those scenes in movies where they're filming on the back lot of a film studio and people in all kinds of costumes are randomly walking by, or eating together in the commissary? And they look out of place in normal surroundings...that's what it looked like outside the bathrooms today after lunch. We had fairies standing next to a skunk talking to a crocodile by a pirate...you never know what you'll find around the corner in summer camp!
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education Yesterday, for the final camp quilt prompt, campers were asked to write down 3 words that represented camp. This morning, as I was reading through all of them, I thought: this would make a great word cloud. So here it is, the very first Shubert Summer Camp word cloud! Looks like our campers have had learned a lot and, most importantly, had lots of FUN!
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education Tomorrow is the first showcase day already! Check out the amazing posters the Graphic Design class made for all of our showcase events!
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education The Showcase Committee class has been busy with creative props this session. Not only have the turtle shells been given much more definition, an entire food line has sprung up in support of one of the Acting class's plays. Enjoy their special Chinese take-out or pizza! And if you have a baby, they'll sell you some diapers!
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education Lots of good stuff going on today.Ceramics and Painting and Drawing are finalizing what will be going into the gallery on Thursday. Peter Pan is all blocked, and they'll be ready for a run through with costumes tomorrow. Dance class has all of their props ready for their look into the future when they are very old. But they prove in their dance that you're only as old as you feel!
Ms. Nelson & Ms. Wuzzardo Happy Monday! The kids have come back with fun stories about their weekends and are excited to hang out with their friends, teachers, and TA’s. Sadly, this is the last week of camp, but that won’t stop us from still having a bunch of fun. This is also show week, so everyone is beginning to put together their art pieces and performances for Thursday. For the showcase, Ms. Nelson is allowing the kids to write quotes that could be featured on the programs about their feelings about camp or Shubert theater.
Hopefully, everyone will have a great last week of camp and make memories that last for a lifetime. Athena and Briyana (Pictures below: After Care is working on Kindness Bracelets and key chains--gotta keep the lessons of those camp care cards going after camp is over! How did we get to the final week of camp already?? Everyone is in full showcase/show mode, working on their performances and gallery later this week. In musical camp, the cast of Peter Pan is learning the last of their blocking while intern Jon S. gets help from the Showcase Committee class while he writes light cues. The rest of Showcase Committee class is working on props, set blocks, and costume pieces (turtle shells!) for the acting classes. Everything is going to look great!
