Kelly Wuzzardo
Shubert Director of Education
Ms. Nelson brought a creative challenge to the kids who signed up for gym for their after lunch activity on Friday. The group was broken into teams. Each team was given a large trash bag and a roll of masking tape. The challenge--to use those materials to make the best and most creative costume they could! Everyone had tons of fun, and the winning team (chosen by Ms. Nelson and Mr. Bartosic) won some cool Shubert Theatre patches. In summer camp, we even create art in gym!!

We wanted to get some feedback from Ms. Nelson about the camp so we decided to interview her today.
Interviewer: How do you feel that your first year of being a Camp Director has gone? Ms. Nelson: It’s been the best experience that I’ve had as a teacher or camp director. I like being able to help the other teachers and campers. Interviewer: Is there anything you’ve learned while being a camp director? Ms. Nelson: I’ve learned to be exceptionally organized. In a camp there are many moving parts so you have to be really organized. Interviewer: How do you feel about the kid’s work that you’ve seen? Ms. Nelson: Watching the campers make art is the best part of camp, it’s a profound experience. Interviewer: Did you change in any way during camp? Ms. Nelson: I haven’t really changed that much just become my better self so I could rise to the challenge of being a camp director. Interviewer: You’ve given many pieces of advice to the kids throughout camp, what parting advice would you give them as they leave here? Ms. Nelson: I only hope that the campers leave with the thought to always be kind and work hard which has been our motto here. Also they should know that art can always be used as a way for them to express themselves. Athena and Briyana We had a special treat at snack today--big thanks to Deep River Snacks for donating their delicious potato chips for our campers. The kids loved them! It was a great way to help wrap up our first week of session 2.
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education Happy Thursday everyone! The week is almost over and as it comes to a close preparations for the showcase begin. I know, it came so quickly! Before you know it, it’ll be time to say goodbye until next year. Don’t worry though, there’s still another week left. It’s so impressive to see how much we’ve accomplished in such a short frame of time as well as the friendships that have formed because of this camp. All the kids have created wonderful art pieces in their classes and worked super hard. We’re all so excited to see what each class has to bring to the upcoming showcase. We know that it will be unique and amazing. Athena and Briyana Below: Showcase Committee class is hard at work creating props for the musical and acting classes. They're painting a canoe and ship for Peter Pan, made ice cream cones for acting, and are designing fairy wings for Tinker Bell's friends.
Every week campers respond to a prompt about camp, writing their answers on colorful squares that are added to our camp "quilt." This week's question: What is the coolest thing you've learned at camp? There were lots of great answers. Some popular ones were the rule of thirds (in photography), how to project your voice (in acting), and making great new friends (in all classes!). Our camp quilt will be complete next week. What will the final question be???
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education The Musical Camp TA's were very excited yesterday when they got their very own costumes so they could be water sprites in Peter Pan. Someone has to keep that water moving! Ms. Alexander also made the treasure map on Mr. Darling's shirt. In the afternoon, Showcase Committee class and Graphic Design class took a tour of the Shubert with Ms, Kathy. They watched a video about the history of the Shubert, got to see the trap room and dressing rooms under the stage, and checked out the ghost light while taking in the view from onstage. They are now a part of the Shubert's 100 plus year history!
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Theatre Director of Education This session, Creative Writing and Visual Arts have teamed up to become a new super class with a combined project for the showcase gallery. There are paper mache letters, Haiku poems, colorful paint--it looks like the finished product will be amazing!
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education Aftercare isn't just about waiting around for your ride. Yesterday, the aftercare group took a walk to the Green and used sidewalk chalk to leave positive messages for all of the people who walk through every day. Campers, making the world a better place through art!
Kelly Wuzzardo Shubert Director of Education This morning, we began the day off with some announcements from Ms. Nelson before everyone was dismissed to their first period classes. She announced that during lunch, she will ask the first question of the day for this session. The answers that the campers provide on the tiny, colorful paper will be added to our camp quilt. Everyone seems to be enjoying their classes and I know that they’re all working very hard to create wonderful pieces for the showcase next week. Last week’s showcase was such a success that I’m sure that this showcase will not disappoint either. Hopefully, everyone is having a good time and continues to enjoy the rest of camp. Briyana and Athena Photos: Showcase Committee Class and Graphic Design Class took a trip to the Yale Art Gallery to get ideas for setting up the Shubert Camp gallery.
